Exchanging as a private individual
If you want to exchange banknotes that become invalid, you must always bring a completed form and documentation.
If you want to exchange banknotes, always bring the following with you:
- Valid photo ID (passport, official national ID card or Nordic driver’s licence)
- Official proof of your permanent address. In Denmark, this is typically your social security (CPR) card. If you have an address outside of Denmark, corresponding official proof of address will be required
- A completed exchanging form. Click on the link below, fill in and print the form
How to get your money
- Private individuals can exchange a maximum of kr. 5,000 to new banknotes. The limit applies regardless of whether you exchange your banknotes in one go or in multiple exchanges.
- You can also choose to have the money deposited in your bank account. Processing time can be up to six weeks.
Danmarks Nationalbank and FOREX do not charge a fee for exchanging the banknotes that will become invalid.
If the money is to be transferred to your bank account, Danmarks Nationalbank will pay the amount 1 to 1 in Danish kroner without charging a fee. However, be aware that in some cases your local bank may charge a fee for receiving the money, which is not covered by Danmarks Nationalbank. The amount received may therefore be minus any fees from your own bank.
When transferring to a foreign account, the amount will be converted to a currency other than Danish kroner, which may incur an exchange fee. The exchange fee is not covered by Danmarks Nationalbank.

Beware of fraudsters
- Be aware that fraudsters may try to get you to hand over your cash, for example, by saying they are from Danmarks Nationalbank or your bank. Neither Danmarks Nationalbank nor other authorities will contact you and ask you to hand over cash.
- Say no if anyone else asks you to exchange or deposit cash for them. You risk aiding criminals and contributing to serious financial crime.
